Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps

Volunteers in Spirit - Professionals in Service

KBHVAC regularly hosts continuing medical education classes for EMS providers.  We offer public First Aid and CPR classes by request, and we are often available to provide stand-by services at community sporting events and gatherings.  Please contact us to learn more

Love and KBHVAC

Paula and Gary

Paula and Gary

Our volunteer corps is a diverse group; we represent an array of different age groups and professions and we were drawn to volunteering for a variety of reasons. However common threads among our members are kindness and compassion, and the desire to make our community – and ultimately our world – a better place.

We know that kindness attracts and invites kindness, so it’s no surprise that many of our members volunteer with their significant others – or even met their partners through their involvement with EMS.

Paula and Gary Levine have been married for 37 years and joined our ambulance community four years ago.   They cover shifts whenever their busy schedules allow, and have even taken on roles additional roles in committees. “We are incredibly proud to be part of the ambulance corps,” shares Gary. “It’s a good feeling to know we can help other people in our community.”

Jonathan and Kasia

Jonathan and Kasia

Jonathan Flink wed his beautiful bride Kasia in 2015 and the ceremony was attended by many of our members. Kasia joined KBHVAC shortly afterwards. “I work in EMS in addition to volunteering,” says Jonathan. “It’s nice to be able to show Kasia what my career is like; the fact that she enjoys it so much is an added bonus!”

Amanda Carducci and Joe Woodruff met through their roles as EMTs. “Joe and I met while working at Westchester EMS,” said Amanda. He switched his schedule to be on my shift so we could get to know each other more. That was almost two years ago. Now we live together and even have our first ‘child,’ – a Lab mix named Riley!”

Joan Zafian-Carone and Rick Carone may be our longest standing couple. The pair met on an ambulance call in 1986 – over 30 years ago. They became a couple in 1989 and were married in 1992.   They continue to ride calls today – and we love hearing their stories of the early days of EMS.

We have numerous other “member couples,” as well as many members who have met their significant others through the emergency services. We know that our ambulance corps has created and fostered countless friendships over the years; we love that it has also served as the catalyst for new romances, and as a shared passion in existing relationships.

From all of us at KBHVAC, Happy Valentine’s Day!

We were proud to donate our aging ambulance to the New York State Preparedness Training Center, operated by the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. Its mission is to provide first responders and government officials with the best knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to safely and effectively prevent, prepare for and respond to terrorist acts and other manmade and natural disasters.

Member Julia Barone spearheaded a record-breaking blood drive at our Corps on July 26. We thank our entire community for its support of our efforts to reduce the critical blood shortage in our area.

Parades offer a wonderful opportunity to represent our Corps and to build camaraderie among neighboring fire departments and EMS agencies. We are grateful to work alongside so many phenomenal first responders. On July 27th, we marched in Brewster Fire Department’s parade, taking home trophies for Best Ambulance Corps and Best Non-Firematic Color Guard. On July 29th, we marched in the Bedford Fire Department Parade and were awarded with the Best Ambulance trophy. We look forward to attending Putnam Valley Fire Department’s parade in October.

Our Corps responds to approximately 900 emergency medical calls annually, supported entirely by volunteers. We are grateful for the kindness and dedication of our growing membership – and for the ongoing support from our community.
